Debt associated with complex disease states is a common barrier to equitable healthcare—one that disproportionately impacts families based on several factors, including socioeconomic status, demographic characteristics and even family size.¹ Since 2007, the UnitedHealthcare Children’s Foundation (UHCCF) has awarded 30,000 grants valued at $62.2 million to children and their families across the U.S. for medical expenses not covered, or not fully covered, by a family’s commercial health insurance.

As one of the largest charitable organizations in the healthcare industry, UHCCF encourages families faced with challenging medical debt to apply for healthcare grants to address their children’s healthcare costs.

Driven by the belief that equitable healthcare starts with healthy families, UHCCF relies on financial support from like-minded partners, such as Labcorp, who share a culture of philanthropy, a dedication to community service and a commitment to health equity.

For the last decade, Labcorp has supported UHCCF’s mission through a variety of fundraising efforts and sponsorships at a local and national level, making it the single largest partner of the Foundation in the diagnostics industry.

Engaging communities at all levels

Whether it’s a seasonal event, a wine tasting or a golf tournament, Labcorp partners with UHCCF for many of its fundraising efforts.

As an example, for the last two winters, Labcorp has served as the sole sponsor for UHCCF’s Holiday Heroesfundraiser. In 2020, Holiday Heroes raised $146,700, funding approximately 104 medical grants for children across the U.S. The following year, the program broke its own record, raising $147,547 that funded approximately 82 medical grants for children’s medical costs.

In August, at the largest national annual event, Labcorp was a key sponsor, helping the Foundation raise over $2 million for medical grants for children.

Bo Boston, vice president of payor solutions at Labcorp, plays a key role in organizing these events. He believes seeing the impact that these grants have on children and their families reflects the true benefit of the partnership for himself and the company.
