Dr Hyland graduated from Brunel University, London, England in 1976. He received his PhD in biochemistry from Brunel in 1980. He held postdoctoral fellowships at the Gustave Roussy Institute in Paris, France and at the Institute of Child Health in London England, 2000-2006. He held the title of Lecturer in Biochemistry at London University 1987-1989. From 1989 to 1995 he was Senior Research Scientist at the Baylor Research Institute in Dallas, Texas. From 1995 to 2004 he held the positions of Laboratory Director, Metabolic Disease Analytical Services; Director, Department of Neurochemistry and Director, Quality Improvement at the Institute of Metabolic Disease, Dallas Texas. During this period, he also held the positions of Professor, Institute for Biomedical Studies, Baylor University, Texas and Adjunct Associate Professor of Neurology, University of Texas South Western Medical Center Dallas, Texas. He was Director, Department of Neurochemistry, Horizon Molecular Medicine Atlanta Georgia, 2004-2007. In 2008 he co-founded Medical Neurogenetics LLC, Atlanta GA.
Dr Hyland is Vice President, Chief Compliance Officer and Director of the Department of Neurochemistry at Medical Neurogenetics Laboratories. His research areas are in the field of neurochemistry, in particular, inherited disorders affecting neurotransmitter, folate and pyridoxine metabolism. He has authored more than 200 articles and abstracts published in such journals as Neurology, Pediatric Research, Annals of Neurology, Journal of Neurochemistry, Clinical Chemistry, Proceedings of the National Academy of Science, The Lancet and New England Journal of Medicine. He has held many research grants, mentored six PhD students and has twice received the annual award from the Society for the Study of Inborn Errors of Metabolism.
In addition to science, Dr Hyland enjoys golf, fishing, and fine wines.
